Introduction
The Department of Endodontics, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, founded by Louis I. Grossman 60 years ago, has successfully become one of the best Endodontic Departments in the world, with alumni scattered across more than 30 countries worldwide. Over the years, Penn’s Department of Endodontics has evolved into a leading center for microsurgery in endodontics, driven by a rich history of innovation, academic excellence, and a commitment to advancing dental care.
The transformative journey of Penn’s endodontic department toward becoming a hub for microsurgery began in the mid-20th century. During this period, the department emphasized the importance of advanced training and research. This dedication attracted renowned faculty and bright students, fostering an atmosphere of innovation. The introduction of the operating microscope in the 1990s marked a pivotal moment, significantly enhancing the precision and success rates of endodontic procedures. Penn was among the first to incorporate this technology into its curriculum and clinical practice, setting a new standard in the field.
At Penn Dental Medicine they have been working on these changes since the establishment of the Training Center in 1993, testing the new technologies and techniques in a rigorous clinic setting. The Training Center was established as the first university-based Microscope Training Program by Dr. Syngcuk Kim , Louis I. Grossman Professor, Department of Endodontics. Dr. Kim is a renowned microcirculatory researcher and practicing endodontist. He has been using the surgical operating microscope since 1974 in his research and since 1992 in his private endodontic practice in Rockefeller Center, New York City. He has also been an instrumental force in incorporating microendodontics and microsurgery into endodontic practice in the USA. Dr. Kim is the primary author of the “Color Atlas of Microsurgery in Endodontics” (Mosby, 2001) and chief editor of “The Microscope In Endodontics” (Dental Clinics of North America, 1997).
Today, the Department of Endodontics at Penn is celebrated for its comprehensive microsurgery program. It offers advanced training that combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience using the latest technologies. The department’s focus on research has led to numerous breakthroughs in endodontic techniques and materials, continually improving patient outcomes. Faculty members, who are leaders in the field, contribute to significant publications and present at global conferences, further cementing Penn’s reputation as a center of excellence.
Our Agenda
